Sustainability
Help make the 2024 Independence Blue Cross Broad Street run an environmentally-friendly event!
Our goal is to divert as much waste from the landfill as possible. You can help by participating in our low-waste initiatives on race day. Join us in being a sustainable runner by following these eco-friendly practices!
- Gear check your extra clothing rather than discarding it on the course: After the race, any discarded clothing is carefully collected, washed, and donated to Our Closet in Your Neighborhood, a program of JFCS of Greater Philadelphia. However, the volume of clothing can still be substantial. You can assist by checking your clothing at the gear check and retrieving it after the race.
- Follow waste signage: We will offer trash, recycling at the start line and trash, recycling, and compost at the finish (thanks to our collaboration with Bennett Compost!) Please ensure you dispose of your waste in the appropriate bins provided. Look out for signage and volunteers who will guide you on which waste belongs in which bin, making it easy for everyone to contribute to a cleaner, greener event.
- Recruit sustainability volunteers: If you have friends, family, or coworkers who aren’t participating in the race but still want to contribute, we welcome them to join as sustainability volunteers! They can cheer you on while also making a positive impact on the planet. Group volunteers can sign up HERE and individual volunteers can sign up HERE.
- Donate your gently used or new shoes at the Health and Fitness Expo:The Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run is pleased to partner with Community Recycling and Students Run Philly Style for our 2024 event. Bring your gently used or new shoes of any type (running, casual, dress, adult, kids) to the Health & Fitness Expo on May 3rd & May 4th to donate. Donation bins will be located at Students Run Philly Styleโs booth. Your used shoes will be distributed to communities in need.
- Use public transportation: Walk or take SEPTA to get around the city. Be sure to check out iSEPTAPhilly.com/broadstreetrun for additional details for race day.
- Ask your hotel to not change your sheets and towels with each cleaning service.
- Make use of our Big Belly solar-powered trash cans while exploring Center City Philadelphia
- Visit local businesses: Local production leaves less of a carbon footprint.
Even our Health & Wellness Expo is “going green.” The Pennsylvania Convention Center, which hosts the Expo, performs single stream recycling to divert waste from landfills. The recent expansion of the Pennsylvania Convention Center achieved LEEDยฎ certification in 2011.
